Welcome

Contrary to a generally held prejudice of the division between Art and
Technology, this book by Joseph Black shows how artists from earliest times
have involved the visual qualities of each new advance in technology in their
pictures. From the work of unknown artists of the 5th and 6th
centuries showing the advance of the waterwheel worked in mosaic in Istanbul
to the 20th century artist: Mondrian's painting of 'A Windmill in Sunlight'.

The book covers the great engineering advances including Bridges, Railways,
Waterways, Mining and Buildings, which while serving Man, inspired the
artists of each period to use them aesthetically in their pictures.

The gallery visitor will find a fresh insight into the pictures he believes
he 'knows' and may view the advance of technology in a new light.
